Book Club at the MFA – Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World

Join us and Keep St. Pete Lit, a local organization that supports the literary community, for a book club connecting the visual and literary arts.  Each month’s featured book will relate to the MFA’s collection or special exhibitions.

What better way to celebrate the month of love than with a gripping tale of obsession and desire.  In Aja Raden’s fast-paced Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World, we dive into the social, economic and, cultural history of eight iconic jewels and how they shaped history.

Stoned blends popular culture, history and science into three categories—Want, Take, and Have—and, explains how engagement rings intersect with the GI Bill, the inexplicable cultural value of green-tinted jewelry in multiple cultures around the world, why the glass beads that bought Manhattan for the Dutch may have actually made strong financial sense and, how a prized piece of jewelry started a revolution.

FREE with Admission ($10 on Thursdays after 5pm)
