Deck the Great Hall – Holiday Open House

The Museum of Fine Arts traditionally celebrates the season with a holiday tree placed in the MFA’s Great Hall. This year we begin a new tradition: we have commissioned an artist to create an original, site-specific work of art for our museum’s holiday celebration. We will ring in the holidays together with a community open house where the artwork will be unveiled for the first time. We expect that this holiday commission will become a treasured and exciting tradition at the MFA!

This year, renowned interdisciplinary artist Dominique Labauvie was invited to create a holiday design, as well as custom ornaments for our tree. His work for this commission focuses on the idea of the Great Hall as the ‘hearth’ and center of our museum building, a place of welcome where people gather to share experience and to connect. The linear quality of the installation is anchored by the familiar form of the holly leaf, a symbol of life and protection across many cultures for centuries.

Please join us for a Holiday Open House on Thursday, November 29th for a tree lighting event with the artist from 6-8pm. Refreshments will be available, as well as live music.  Admission to the MFA collection galleries will be FREE for all visitors starting at 6pm.  Please join us at 6pm for the tree-lighting as we celebrate the start of the holiday season with this new tradition.

This event is generously sponsored by The Stuart Society.
