Friends of Decorative Arts: The Art of Circus Posters

Jennifer Lemmer Posey

The decorative arts – fine furniture, jewelry, ceramics, and glass – are all around us and in the Museum. FODA expands understanding of their variety and beauty. Plus, you will make new friends at the meetings. Annual dues are $20 in addition to Museum membership.

FODA programs are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 2 pm during season. Non-FODA members can attend for $5, plus MFA admission. Carolyn Nygren is the volunteer coordinator.

Jennifer Lemmer Posey, Associate Curator of the Circus Museum at the Ringling Museum of Art, speaks to us today on The Art of Circus Posters.

With an expertise built over 15 years of working with the 8,000 posters at the Ringling, Jennifer curates rotating exhibitions that explore the circus and its important role in popular culture. She will explore the relationship of circuses and print advertising to the changes in American society. From letterpress bills of the early 19th century to the color explosion of pictorial imagery and the introduction of commercial lithography, circus impresarios partnered with printers to create eye-catching, dynamic images that excited audiences. A hundred years later, these posters remain an exciting window into both the circus arts and American culture.
