The daughter of a doctor in Devon, Daisy Makeig-Jones was educated and desired her independence. She studied art, and in 1909, at age 28, she agreed to work as a “paintress” on the Wedgwood factory floor with girls aged 11 to 14. Within two years she had her own design studio at the company and became a full-fledged designer in 1914.
