ARTFUL CONVERSATION | TRUE TO THE TINT: THE QUEST FOR COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Join us for an engaging discussion with Dr. Robert Drapkin, one of Tampa Bay’s foremost collectors, Jason Wyatt, Director of Collections Management, and Dr. Stanton Thomas, Chief Curator, as they explore the exhibition True to the Tint: The Quest for Color Photography. On view through September 22, this exhibition showcases extraordinarily rare early photographs that were either hand-tinted or produced through now-lost color processes from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This artful conversation will delve into the exhibition’s creation, the collection of the works, and the obsolete color processes used to produce these images. It will also address the technical challenges of displaying these photographs. Additionally, attendees will gain insights into iconic artists and images featured in the exhibition, such as E.G. Barnhill’s vibrant photographs of Florida sunsets and Rudolph Eickemeyer’s luminous portrait of Evelyn Nesbit.
Free for MFA Members; $15 for Not-Yet-Members. Registration required. Not a member? Join today to take advantage of all that an MFA Membership has to offer!

LIVE CONSERVATION SATURDAY: RESTORING A JAIN SHRINE
This small, intensive exhibition, which is the second iteration of the Live Conservation series, focuses on the treatment of the museum’s extraordinary carved and painted Jain Shrine. This rare object, which was used for daily worship by members of the Jain faith in a private home, preserves most of its original surface. However, over time dust, soot, and the touch of hands have dulled its rich colors.
Luis Seixas—an alumnus of the conservation program at the prestigious Universidade Nova, Lisbon—will meticulously undertake the task of cleaning, consolidating, and restoring this precious artifact live within the Minck Gallery. This unique experiential project will allow visitors to see the conservation process and interact with the conservator—allowing them to ask questions about treatment, technique, and materials.
Live Conservation: Restoring a Jain Shrine occurs most weekdays (Tuesday through Friday) between 10 am – 2 pm, with a break around noon, with special Saturday sessions (10 am – 12 pm) each month.
Free for MFA Members, with Museums for All, or with museum admission. Not a member? Join today to take advantage of all that an MFA Membership has to offer!
