Early in 1962, Margaret Acheson Stuart spent much of her time in a dilapidated building at the corner of Beach Drive and Second Avenue North.  In such a setting, one could visualize, dimly, Mrs. Stuart’s dream: to establish a small, superior Museum of Fine Arts in the city.

No record remains of how many women met on November 29, 1962 for the first organizational meeting.  “Stuart Society” was chosen as the name.  By-laws were adopted and officers elected.  The Stuart Society and the MFA have been intertwined ever since.

Chairs: Susan Hicks and Judy Stanton
