Park Avenue Brass is a brass quintet comprised of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts students. The five members of the group are unified by their goals to give diverse, entertaining musical performances, to educate others about music and their instruments, and to serve their community. Since the group’s formation in Fall 2010, they have been invited to perform in churches, high schools, and elementary schools in the Richmond area. In May 2012, Park Avenue Brass traveled to Cartagena, Colombia with the generous financial assistance of a grant from the VCU School of the Arts – Department of Music and the Cartagena based Fundacion Tocando Puertas Para Abrir Futuros (Knocking on Doors to Open Futures). In Cartagena, Park Avenue Brass performed in Teatro Adolfo Mejia, in public squares, and in various schools. The language barrier faced by Park Avenue Brass pushed the members to seek other methods of teaching, and those methods enhanced their communication and connection with the audience during their performances.
