The Contemporaries: Field Trip to FMoPA

For our first Field Trip of 2017, The Contemporaries are honored to meet with conceptual photographers Wendy Babcox, Jason Lazarus and Noelle Mason at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts as they discuss their current exhibition There is a Light that Never Goes Out. USF Tampa colleagues and friends, these artists investigate both the personal interaction with the photographic subject as well as the materiality of photography.

Babcox works primarily in photography and recent works draw upon human relationships with the natural world. Her solo and collaborative projects have been exhibited and performed nationally and internationally in such venues as the Bronx Museum, the Kitchen, and Exit Art in New York; The Glass Curtain Gallery at Columbia College in Chicago; Orlando Museum of Art; the International Center of Bethlehem; Al Hoash Gallery, Jerusalem and in Russia, New Zealand, Mexico, Colombia and Peru.

Jason Lazarus is a Florida-based artist, curator, educator, and writer. Working at the intersection of expanded photography and community engagement, Lazarus’ work seeks experiential forms and methods to grapple with the politics of representation. Recent solo exhibitions include Chicago Works: Jason Lazarus at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Live Archive at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, and The Rickshaw at Andrew Rafacz Gallery (Chicago).

Noelle Mason is a trans-media artist who manipulates appropriated images, objects, and contexts to investigate and expose the subtle seductiveness of power facilitated by systems of visual control. Noelle has shown nationally and internationally in a variety of non-traditional spaces, galleries, and institutions including the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Smithsonian Institute. She is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Artist Grant and the 2016 Florida Prize for Contemporary Art.
