Shana Moulton, Whispering Pines 4, 2007, video still

This live music and performance event features Shana Moulton’s alter ego Cynthia in the one-act opera Whispering Pines 10 (2010) and vocalist Susan Hellman Spatafora. Throughout the Whispering Pines series, begun in 2002 and ongoing, we see Cynthia grappling with various maladies, seeking out remedies in the forms of pore strips, massage, neti pots, and the AVON lady. The series title pays homage to David Lynch’s surrealist television series Twin Peaks (1990-91), and also references the trailer park for seniors near Yosemite, California where Moulton grew up. The series is shown in its entirety for the first time in a museum setting in the current exhibition Shana Moulton: Journeys Out of the Body.

Whispering Pines 10 is a collaboration with composer and vocalist Nick Hallett. Based in New York City, Hallett’s work has been presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; and The Kitchen, NY. He is currently collaborating with choreographer Bill T. Jones, as composer of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company’s latest dance-theater work, Analogy: A Trilogy.

This event is free with MFA admission.

Prior to Whispering Pines 10, from 5 – 6pm two dancers from Rogue Dance and a poet (Erica Sutherlin of The Space at 2106 Main) will perform in the Conservatory. Free and open to the public.
