Her work pushes against traditional boundaries: her paintings have resisted not just frames\, but seemingly gravity; her abstract compositions have gone beyond the canvas to embrace the aural. Most recently\, Yankowitz has deepened her interest in technology and new media to create immersive environments that spotlight women-centered histories that have gone unknown for far too long. \nNina Yankowitz was born and raised in New Jersey and lives between New York City and Sag Harbor. Her works are in public collections\, including the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco\, San Francisco\, CA; Virginia Museum of History & Culture\, Richmond\, VA; and the Smith College Museum of Art\, Northampton\, MA. Her archival materials are found in the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. Her 2022 solo exhibition at Eric Firestone Gallery garnered reviews in Artforum and Art in America\, and in 2024 she was inducted into the New York Foundation for the Arts’ Hall of Fame. \nImages: \nNina Yankowitz\, Ms. Majesty\, 1970-71\, Acrylic compressor spray on canvas run through pleating machine. SUMMARY:August Arts Passport Book Club | The Argonauts
DESCRIPTION:August Arts Passport Book Club | The Argonauts\nThis August\, the MFA partners with the Arts Passport Book Club and Tombolo Books for a special collaborative edition featuring The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson—a genre-defying meditation on love\, identity\, and queer family-making. Poetic\, raw\, and intellectually bold\, Nelson’s writing offers a powerful lens through which to explore themes of transformation and intimacy. \nOn August 23\, readers are invited to gather at the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg for a morning of reflection and dialogue. The program includes a group discussion followed by a docent-led tour of Nina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In\, the MFA’s current retrospective of pioneering multimedia artist Nina Yankowitz. This pairing offers an immersive experience that connects literature and visual art through shared questions of form\, identity\, and expression. \nArts Passport members receive a complimentary copy of The Argonauts from Tombolo Books\, along with free admission to the museum. \nAugust Arts Passport Book Club | The Argonauts \nSaturday\, August 23\, 2025\n11:00 AM–1:00 PM \nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nREGISTER \n\nABOUT ARTS PASSPORT BOOK CLUB \nThe Tombolo Book Club is hosted by Avery Anderson and Abby Baker. Avery Anderson is a creative leader\, storyteller\, and advocate for the power of arts to connect and inspire. When they’re not championing creative work that matters\, you can find them exploring new ways to engage and unite the arts community. \nAbby Baker is a Tampa native and writer for the Old Northeast Journal\, events editor at The Gabber\, contributor to Watermark\, and a Best of the Bay winner for her Gabber piece on a stolen bucket of vibrators. She’s also the co-managing editor of the Tampa Bay Arts Passport\, where she connects\, writes\, and posts about all the amazing things to see\, do\, audition for\, watch\, and wander around town. She lives in St. Pete with her cat\, Snooki\, and moonlights as a project manager during the week. \nABOUT THE ARGONAUTS BY MAGGIE NELSON \n \nAn intrepid voyage out to the frontiers of the latest thinking about love\, language\, and family \nMaggie Nelson’s The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir\, a work of “autotheory” offering fresh\, fierce\, and timely thinking about desire\, identity\, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. It binds an account of Nelson’s relationship with her partner and a journey to and through a pregnancy to a rigorous exploration of sexuality\, gender\, and “family.” An insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of caretaking becomes the rallying cry for this thoughtful\, unabashed\, uncompromising book. \nABOUT TOMBOLO BOOKS \nTombolo Books is an independent bookstore dedicated to promoting the value and pleasure of reading throughout St. Petersburg by offering thoughtful inventory curation\, extensive literary knowledge\, and excellent customer service. \n \n
