SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception
DESCRIPTION:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception\n\nIn conjunction with In Caravaggio’s Light: Baroque Masterpieces from the Fondazione Roberto Longhi\, the MFA introduces the Baroque + Bottle Book Club\, a dynamic literary series that pairs contemporary fiction with the timeless themes of the Baroque.  \nPresented in partnership with Book + Bottle\, St. Pete’s beloved independent bookstore and wine bar\, each gathering invites readers to dive into contemporary novels that echo the emotional intensity\, moral tension\, and timeless questions embedded in the Baroque movement. With expertly paired wines\, lively\, guided conversations\, and exclusive in-gallery experiences\, this series creates unexpected connections between the masterpieces on view and the pressing issues of today.   \nBaroque painters depicted the human body with unflinching honesty\, portraying figures who were wounded\, sensual\, aged\, and ecstatic. Sacred subjects were radically humanized for the first time in Western art\, as Caravaggio and other Baroque artists emphasized the reality of dirty feet\, lined faces\, and visible scars.   \nThis session turns to Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties\, to explore how contemporary literature examines how physical form is perceived\, regulated\, stigmatized\, and celebrated. This daring collection of stories shatters genre boundaries while mapping the realities of women’s lives and the critical eye society places on their bodies. From eerie horror to dark comedy\, Machado’s tales bend psychological realism\, science fiction\, and fabulism into narratives that are simultaneously unsettling\, provocative\, and deeply human.   \nWhat to Expect: \n\n6:00–6:30 pm — Arrivals: grab a glass of wine and ease in with thought-starter prompts and casual conversation.\n6:30–7:30 pm — Guided discussion led by Book + Bottle\, exploring the book’s themes and connections to the Baroque.\n7:30–8:00 pm — Gallery spotlight with MFA curators and educators: a focused look at a work from In Caravaggio’s Light to bring the conversation full circle.\n\n\n\nBaroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception \nThursday\, February 19\, 2026\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members. \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. They have the most passionate\, friendly\, and helpful team in town to help you choose a book or a bottle or to take care of you and your friends on your night off. \nThey’re an independent\, woman-owned\, values-driven\, sustainably run\, local-first business that believes little kindnesses can make our community—and the world—a better place. \nAbout Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body And Other Parties\n \nHer Body and Other Parties (2017) is Carmen Maria Machado’s debut story collection\, blending horror\, fabulism\, and realist tones into eerie\, darkly witty tales about the body\, desire\, queerness\, and the narratives society imposes on women. Across these genre-bending pieces\, Machado pushes myths and pop culture into strange\, luminous territory—provocative\, unsettling\, and fiercely inventive—without tipping any endings. \nSee ALL Baroque + Bottle Book Club Dates and Times: \n\n\n\nNovember 20\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Representation + Marginalization\nDecember 18\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion \nJanuary 15 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Fragility + Faith\nFebruary 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception\nMarch 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular\n\n\n\n\nImages: \nJusepe de Ribera\, St. Thomas (detail)\, c. 1612\, Oil on canvas\, Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi\, Florence\, Italy \nIn Caravaggio’s Light: Baroque Masterpieces from the Fondazione Roberto Longhi is organized by Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi and Civita Mostre e Musei.

SUMMARY:Caravaggio In a Different Light | Curator-Led Black Light Tour
DESCRIPTION:An Exclusive Curator-Led Black Light Tour of the Baroque\n\nEvery painting tells two stories: the one the artist intended\, and the one the centuries have left behind… \nAs the acclaimed exhibition In Caravaggio’s Light enters its final days before closing on March 22\, we invite you to a rare\, before-hours investigation of the Baroque. Join Dr. Stanton Thomas\, Hazel and William Hough Chief Curator\, on the morning of March 14 for an exclusive forensic encounter with the collection\, using specialized ultraviolet light (black light) to reveal the hidden history of these 400-year-old masterpieces. \nWhile the naked eye sees only the finished brilliance of the era\, this technical tour allows you to “read” the canvases like a conservator. By comparing works that bear the inevitable scars and repairs of the centuries against the miraculous\, untouched purity of our central Caravaggio\, you will discover the secrets that modern conservation usually keeps hidden. \nTo maintain an intimate atmosphere and ensure clear sightlines for the UV demonstrations\, this special engagement is strictly limited to only 15 participants. Your ticket provides private access to the galleries before they open to the public\, offering a quiet\, scholarly environment to engage directly with the Curator. Following the tour\, guests are invited to remain in the museum for the day to enjoy the full exhibition one last time. Registration is $65 for not-yet-members and $55 for members\, inclusive of full museum admission. \n\n\nCaravaggio in a Different Light\nCurator-Led Black Light Tour \nSaturday\, March 14\, 2026\n9:00 AM–10:00 AM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$55 for MFA Members; $65 for Not-Yet-Members. \nSOLD OUT! \nTICKETS \nNot yet a member?\nBecome a member today and enjoy all the benefits membership at the MFA offers!  \nMFA Members enjoy free admission for an entire year\, early access to special exhibitions\, discounts at the MFA Shop and Café Clementine\, special member-only exclusive events\, and more. \nBECOME A MEMBER

SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular
DESCRIPTION:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular\n\nIn conjunction with In Caravaggio’s Light | Baroque Masterpieces from the Fondazione Roberto Longhi\, the MFA introduces the Baroque + Bottle Book Club\, a dynamic literary series that pairs contemporary fiction with the timeless themes of the Baroque. \nIn a pivotal shift\, Baroque artists began placing sacred and mythological stories within the messy reality of everyday life. By infusing the ordinary with spiritual resonance\, these works challenged audiences to see the divine in unexpected places. This session explores how contemporary literature uncovers beauty\, mindfulness\, and meaning in the secular corners of our complex world.   \nWe’ll read Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead\, a modern reimagining of David Copperfield set in rural America. Told in the unsparing voice of Demon\, a boy born into poverty and foster care\, the novel follows his survival through loss\, addiction\, fleeting loves\, and fleeting triumphs. Kingsolver channels Dickensian scope with contemporary grit\, using humor\, heartbreak\, and fierce compassion to illuminate the extraordinary in lives often ignored.   \nWhat to Expect: \n\n6:00–6:30 pm — Arrivals: grab a glass of wine and ease in with thought-starter prompts and casual conversation.\n6:30–7:30 pm — Guided discussion led by Book + Bottle\, exploring the book’s themes and connections to the Baroque.\n7:30–8:00 pm — Gallery spotlight with MFA curators and educators: a focused look at a work from In Caravaggio’s Light to bring the conversation full circle.\n\n\n\nBaroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular \nThursday\, March 19\, 2026\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nSOLD OUT \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. \nAbout Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead\n \nDemon Copperhead (2022) by Barbara Kingsolver reimagines Dickens’s David Copperfield in contemporary Appalachia\, following a quick-witted boy as he fights to define himself amid poverty\, foster care\, and an opioid-ravaged landscape. Told in a vivid\, unsentimental first-person voice\, the novel traces resilience\, community\, and the power of storytelling without offering tidy answers—only hard-won clarity and heart. \nSee ALL Baroque + Bottle Book Club Dates and Times: \n\nNovember 20\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Representation + Marginalization\nDecember 18\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion \nJanuary 15 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Fragility + Faith\nFebruary 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception\nMarch 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular\n\n\nImages: \nJusepe de Ribera\, St. Thomas (detail)\, c. 1612\, Oil on canvas\, Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi\, Florence\, Italy \nOrganized by Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi and Civita Mostre e Musei.

SUMMARY:Writer’s Workshop | The Alive Poets Society: Poetry and Ancient Art
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with poet Ariana Kija Matondo\, the MFA is hosting a three-part poetry workshop series focused on ekphrastic poetry—the art of writing descriptive and imaginative poetry inspired by visual art. \nIn the second workshop of the series\, participants will explore ancient art and ancient poetry while engaging in intimate conversations about how these works differ from the art and poetry we encounter today. Through guided reflection and discussion\, the workshop invites participants to consider how understanding the past can deepen our sense of self. SUMMARY:Writer’s Workshop | The Garden of Your Mind
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Poetry Month at the MFA! In partnership with poet Ariana Kija Matondo\, the MFA is hosting a three-part poetry workshop series focused on ekphrastic poetry—the art of writing descriptive and imaginative poetry inspired by visual art. \nIn the third workshop of the series\, participants are invited to consider how art exists beyond museum walls. Participants will practice mindfulness while gathering sensory notes from the environment around and within them\, deepening the connection between observation\, place\, and poetic expression. \nNo prior poetry experience is required\, and all ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Book + Banisadr Book Club | War + Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:Book + Banisadr Book Club | War + Apocalypse\nIn conjunction with Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist\, the MFA is proud to introduce the Book + Banisadr Book Club\, a three-part literary program that invites participants to immerse themselves into the complex\, turbulent worlds of Banisadr’s works through the lens of contemporary fiction that mimic the artist’s practice in both chaos and composure. \nHeld in partnership with Book + Bottle\, a beloved local independent bookstore and wine bar\, each session will focus on a thoughtfully selected book that echoes the figurative illusions rooted in autobiographical narratives\, sonic recollection\, invented stories\, world history\, collective memory\, and mythology embedded in the imagery of Ali Banisadr’s work. Through this one-of-a-kind pairing of literature and art\, historical themes will be reexamined against the dreadful\, real\, and unreal stories we tell ourselves. \nEach session will feature a specially paired wine and will be carefully facilitated to bridge the artworks in the exhibition to the relevant and resonant conversations shaping our society today. This month’s selection\, The Stationary Shop by Marjan Kamali\, is a poignant novel of love\, loss\, and fate set against the backdrop of 1950s Tehran\, following a young couple whose lives are forever changed by political upheaval. \n\nDrawing on childhood experiences of the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88) in his native Tehran\, where explosions and other aural disturbances were commonplace\, as well as his extant synesthesia\, Banisadr painstakingly and intuitively builds complex compositions that exude a vitality at once turbulent and celebratory. In 1988\, Banisadr left Iran with his family at the age of twelve\, first reaching Turkey and then San Diego\, California. While living in San Francisco\, he became involved with the local graffiti art community while studying psychology. He later moved to New York City where he earned a BFA at the School of Visual Arts (2005) and an MFA at the New York Academy of Art (2007)\, and he continues to live and work in Brooklyn\, NY. \nBook + Banisadr Book Club | War + Apocalypse \nThursday\, May 7\, 2026\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members \nTICKETS \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. \nAbout The Stationary Shop by Marjan Kamali\n \nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of Together Tea and The Lion Women of Tehran\, a poignant\, “powerful” (The Wall Street Journal) and “affecting novel about first love” (Real Simple) that explores loss\, reconciliation\, and the quirks of fate. \nRoya\, a dreamy\, idealistic teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Tehran\, finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s neighborhood stationery shop\, stocked with books and pens and bottles of jewel-colored ink. \nThen Mr. Fakhri\, with a keen instinct for a budding romance\, introduces Roya to his other favorite customer—handsome Bahman\, who has a burning passion for justice and a love for Rumi’s poetry—and she loses her heart at once. Their romance blossoms\, and the little stationery shop remains their favorite place in all of Tehran. \nA few short months later\, on the eve of their marriage\, Roya agrees to meet Bahman at the town square when violence erupts—a result of the coup d’etat that forever changes their country’s future. In the chaos\, Bahman never shows. For weeks\, Roya tries desperately to contact him\, but her efforts are fruitless. With a sorrowful heart\, she moves on—to college in California\, to another man\, to a life in New England—until\, more than sixty years later\, an accident of fate leads her back to Bahman and offers her a chance to ask him the questions that have haunted her for more than half a century: Why did you leave? Where did you go? How is it that you were able to forget me? \nSee ALL Book + Banisadr Book Club Dates and Times: \n\nMay 7\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | War + Apocalypse\nJune 4\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | Mythology + History\nJuly 2\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | Sound + Composition

As part of my commitment to the docent program\, I serve as a gallery guide on select Friday afternoons. \nI am a native Swiss\, born and raised in Luzern\, located in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. In everyday life\, we primarily speak Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch)\, a collection of Alemannic dialects that vary by region. While Swiss German is used in daily conversation\, Standard German (Hochdeutsch) is employed in formal settings such as education\, media\, and written communication. Due to notable differences in pronunciation\, vocabulary\, and grammar\, Swiss German can be difficult for non-native speakers to understand—therefore\, I will be leading the German tours at the MFA in Standard German. \nI am a Swiss Federally Certified Adult Educator and have taught Swiss culture and Standard German to expatriates working for Swiss companies. I am well-traveled and fluent in English as well.

This month’s selection\, Black Leopard\, Red Wolf by Marlon James\, is an award-winning\, genre-defying novel that blends myth\, fantasy\, and African history in an epic quest to find a missing child—exploring truth\, power\, and the stories we choose to believe. \n\nDriving Banisadr’s practice is an encyclopedic knowledge of art history\, literature\, and philosophy\, references of which can be read in each work. His sprawling\, light-filled studio is filled with books and research material. Lining floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are tomes on everything from miniature painting to Bruegel and the Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch\, who has always been a huge influence\, as well as Dante Alighieri\, Rumi\, and Andrei Tarkovsky. “I have a group that I circle around and I always go back to\,” Banisadr says. “For example\, Dante’s Inferno or Homer’s Odyssey. I could keep reading and rereading these epic poems. To me they are so full of visual things.” \nBook + Banisadr Book Club | Mythology + History \nThursday\, June 4\, 2026\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members \nTICKETS \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. Engaged to track down a mysterious boy who disappeared three years earlier\, Tracker breaks his own rule of always working alone when he finds himself part of a group that comes together to search for the boy. The band is a hodgepodge\, full of unusual characters with secrets of their own\, including a shape-shifting man-animal known as Leopard. \nAs Tracker follows the boy’s scent–from one ancient city to another; into dense forests and across deep rivers–he and the band are set upon by creatures intent on destroying them. As he struggles to survive\, Tracker starts to wonder: Who\, really\, is this boy? Why has he been missing for so long? Why do so many people want to keep Tracker from finding him? And perhaps the most important questions of all: Who is telling the truth\, and who is lying? \nDrawing from African history and mythology and his own rich imagination\, Marlon James has written a novel unlike anything that’s come before it: a saga of breathtaking adventure that’s also an ambitious\, involving read. Defying categorization and full of unforgettable characters\, Black Leopard\, Red Wolf is both surprising and profound as it explores the fundamentals of truth\, the limits of power\, and our need to understand them both. \nSee ALL Book + Banisadr Book Club Dates and Times: \n\nMay 7\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | War + Apocalypse\nJune 4\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | Mythology + History\nJuly 2\, 2026 @ 6 pm: Book + Banisadr Book Club | Sound + Composition

SUMMARY:Book + Banisadr Book Club | Sound + Composition
DESCRIPTION:Book + Banisadr Book Club | Sound + Composition\nIn conjunction with Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist\, the MFA is proud to introduce the Book + Banisadr Book Club\, a three-part literary program that invites participants to immerse themselves into the complex\, turbulent worlds of Banisadr’s works through the lens of contemporary fiction that mimic the artist’s practice in both chaos and composure. This month’s selection\, A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan\, is an award-winning\, genre-bending novel that follows interconnected lives across time\, exploring music\, memory\, and the deeply human pursuit of meaning\, redemption\, and connection. \n\nAli Banisadr is gifted with synesthesia; otherwise separate senses are linked – in this case color and sound. This ability translates into abstract landscapes rendered in vibrant colors\, a trait that links him to the art of Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)\, who also experienced synesthesia. The restless surfaces of Banisadr’s paintings juxtapose competing sensibilities\, setting areas of orderly\, precise brushwork against energetic\, gestural ones. As indicated in the title of the exhibition\, the artist sees his paintings as an attempt to understand the innate chaos of the world. They do not reflect any specific conflict but rather express universal turmoil. \nBook + Banisadr Book Club | Sound + Composition \nThursday\, July 2\, 2026\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members \nTICKETS \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. \nAbout A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan\n \nNATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE WINNER • With music pulsing on every page\, this startling\, exhilarating novel of self-destruction and redemption “features characters about whom you come to care deeply as you watch them doing things they shouldn’t\, acting gloriously\, infuriatingly human” (The Chicago Tribune). \nOne of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century • One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years • A Kirkus Reviews Best Fiction Book of the Century • A Los Angeles Times Best Fiction Book of the Last 30 Years \nBennie is an aging former punk rocker and record executive.
