SUMMARY:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art
DESCRIPTION:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nKimono is a traditional Japanese dress which has a strict dress code\, layers of socio-cultural symbolism\, and regulated aesthetic expressions. Since the Japonisme movement in nineteenth-century Europe\, Western painters had been influenced by Ukiyo-e\, Japanese woodblock printing\, which depicted women in kimono during the Edo period (1603-1868). \nVincent Van Gogh painted a courtesan in her distinct kimono and hairstyle in his “Courtesane” (1887)\, and Claude Monet painted his wife in a red kimono gown in “La Japonaise” (1875). Designers\, such as Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin\, designed clothes that were loose-fitting like kimono\, and imitated its geometrical shapes. \nThe Western fascination with kimono continues in the twenty-first century\, such as Dior’s kimono-inspired couture collection\, and Victoria’s Secret’s “Sexy Little Geisha” collection. With the development of social media\, protests and criticisms against the use of kimono in the creative field have been loud and explicit. \nIn this presentation\, Yuniya Kawamura examines where we draw a line between appreciation and appropriation\, and compares and contrasts different viewpoints between Japanese-Americans and native Japanese who were born and bred in Japan.   \nCultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nYuniya Kawamura\nSunday\, April 27\, 2025\n2:00 PM–3:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFREE for MFA Members; Included with the cost of admission for Not-Yet Members. Her work spans sound\, performance\, visual art\, and film—often incorporating custom instruments\, original notation systems\, and experimental technologies. \nA master of sonic exploration\, she performs on “The Spaceship\,” a complex instrument system featuring modular synthesizers\, motion-sensitive controllers\, theremins\, toy pianos\, found objects\, and her custom 6’2” amplified zither\, Black Moon Lilith. \nElizabeth’s visual works have been shown in galleries and international film festivals\, and her acclaimed series FIELD STUDIES and AGGRESSIVE PILLOW TALK received support from the State of Florida and were central to her fellowship at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute (2021–22). \nHer work\, which encourages deep listening and reflection\, challenges traditional narratives and centers the idea that all things exist with essence beyond human definition. \nRecognized globally by scholars and press alike\, Fanfare Magazine and I Care If You Listen have both hailed her as “the Pauline Oliveros of her generation.” \n  \nABOUT NINA YANKOWITZ \nThroughout a career spanning six decades\, Nina Yankowitz (American\, b. 1946) has created a multidisciplinary practice that defies singular definition. Her work pushes against traditional boundaries: her paintings have resisted not just frames\, but seemingly gravity; her abstract compositions have gone beyond the canvas to embrace the aural. Most recently\, Yankowitz has deepened her interest in technology and new media to create immersive environments that spotlight women-centered histories that have gone unknown for far too long. \nNina Yankowitz was born and raised in New Jersey and lives between New York City and Sag Harbor. Her works are in public collections\, including the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco\, San Francisco\, CA; Virginia Museum of History & Culture\, Richmond\, VA; and the Smith College Museum of Art\, Northampton\, MA. Her archival materials are found in the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. Her 2022 solo exhibition at Eric Firestone Gallery garnered reviews in Artforum and Art in America\, and in 2024 she was inducted into the New York Foundation for the Arts’ Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Reza Aramesh and the Baroque Continuum
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk | Reza Aramesh and the Baroque Continuum\n\nThe drama\, theatricality\, and emotional intensity of Baroque art continue to resonate in contemporary practice\, as internationally acclaimed artist Reza Aramesh demonstrates in his work across photography\, sculpture\, video\, and performance. Engaging critically with Western art history\, Aramesh draws on these Baroque qualities while exploring narratives of race\, class\, and sexuality in the modern world. \nIn this talk\, Aramesh will reflect on the idea of the “Baroque continuum\,” examining how the techniques\, staging\, and symbolic power of Caravaggio and his contemporaries continue to influence artists today. Audiences will gain insight into the dialogue between historical art and contemporary creative expression\, experiencing firsthand the enduring impact of the Baroque on modern artistic practice. \n\n\nArtist Talk | Reza Aramesh and the Baroque Continuum \nSunday\, October 26\, 2025\n1:00 PM–2:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFree with cost of admission \nGET TICKETS \nNot yet a member?\nBecome a member today and enjoy all the benefits membership at the MFA offers!  \nMFA Members enjoy free admission for an entire year\, early access to special exhibitions\, discounts at the MFA Shop and Café Clementine\, special member-only exclusive events\, and more. Bring the whole family! \nBECOME A MEMBER \n\nABOUT REZA ARAMESH \n \nReza Aramesh is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work spans sculpture\, drawing\, embroidery\, ceramics\, video\, and performance. His projects have been presented widely\, including at the Venice Biennale (2015\, 2024)\, Bienal de la Habana (2024)\, Asia Society Museum\, New York (2020)\, The Met Breuer (2018)\, SCAD Museum of Art\, Atlanta (2018)\, Akademie der Künste\, Berlin (2016)\, MAXXI\, Rome (2016)\, Art Basel Parcours (2017)\, and Frieze Sculpture Park (2015\, 2017). He has also orchestrated performances and exhibitions at the Barbican Centre\, Tate Britain\, and ICA\, London\, and his works are held in public and private collections across Argentina\, Germany\, Lithuania\, Poland\, the United States\, Belgium\, France\, Iran\, Lebanon\, Israel\, and the United Kingdom. Drawing on media coverage of international conflicts from the mid-20th century to the present\, Aramesh collaborates with non-professional models to re-stage these images into refined sculptural “actions\,” stripping overt signs of war to expose the tension between beauty and brutality. Through this decontextualization\, he probes representation and the iconography of the subjected male body—interrogating race\, class\, and sexuality in critical dialogue with the Western art-historical canon. \nImages: \nReza Aramesh (Iranian\, active London\, b. 1970)\, Study of the Head as Cultural Artifacts (detail)\, 2003\, Hand carved and polished Bianco Michelangelo marble\, Courtesy of the Artist and Dastan Gallery\, Private Collection. \n\nThis program is made possible through the generous support of The Stanton Storer Embrace the Arts Foundation.

SUMMARY:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Representation + Marginalization [SOLD OUT]
DESCRIPTION:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Representation + Marginalization\n\nIn conjunction with In Caravaggio’s Light | Baroque Masterpieces from the Fondazione Roberto Longhi\, the MFA introduces the Baroque + Bottle Book Club\, a dynamic literary series that pairs contemporary fiction with the timeless themes of the Baroque. \nPresented in partnership with Book + Bottle\, St. Pete’s beloved independent bookstore and wine bar\, each gathering invites readers to dive into contemporary novels that echo the emotional intensity\, moral tension\, and timeless questions embedded in the Baroque movement. With expertly paired wines\, lively guided conversations\, and exclusive in-gallery experiences\, this series creates unexpected connections between the masterpieces on view and the pressing issues of today. \nCaravaggio shocked his contemporaries by casting society’s outsiders as saints and Madonnas\, blurring the line between sacred and profane and challenging who is deemed worthy of reverence. This session of Baroque + Bottle turns that lens towards contemporary literature\, asking how stories can reclaim agency for voices too often silenced. \nWe’ll read Raven Leilani’s breakout debut Luster\, a razor-sharp\, darkly comic novel that follows Edie\, a young Black woman stumbling through love\, art\, and survival in a world that rarely makes space for her. Through Leilani’s fearless prose\, Luster lays bare the complexities of race\, sexuality\, and selfhood in the modern age\, echoing the raw humanity at the heart of Caravaggio’s work. \nWhat to Expect: \n\n6:00–6:30 pm — Arrivals: grab a glass of wine and ease in with thought-starter prompts and casual conversation.\n6:30–7:30 pm — Guided discussion led by Book + Bottle\, exploring the book’s themes and connections to the Baroque.\n7:30–8:00 pm — Gallery spotlight with MFA curators and educators: a focused look at a work from In Caravaggio’s Light to bring the conversation full circle.\n\n\n\nBaroque + Bottle Book Club | Representation + Marginalization \nThursday\, November 20\, 2025\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members.\nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. They have the most passionate\, friendly\, and helpful team in town to help you choose a book or a bottle or to take care of you and your friends on your night off. \nThey’re an independent\, woman-owned\, values-driven\, sustainably run\, local-first business that believes little kindnesses can make our community—and the world—a better place. \n\nAbout Raven Leilani’s Luster\n\nLuster (2020) is Raven Leilani’s acclaimed debut novel about a young Black woman in New York trying to make art and make rent as a messy new relationship—complicated by an open marriage—upends her routine. With razor-sharp\, darkly funny prose\, the book explores desire\, race\, class\, work\, and the uneasy ways intimacy and ambition collide. It’s a vivid portrait of coming-of-age in precarious times—audacious\, tender\, and unsettling without ever tipping into neat resolutions. \n\nSee ALL Baroque + Bottle Book Club Dates and Times: \n\nNovember 20\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Representation + Marginalization\nDecember 18\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion\nJanuary 15 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Fragility + Faith\nFebruary 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception\nMarch 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular\n\n\nImages: \nJusepe de Ribera\, St. Thomas (detail)\, c. 1612\, Oil on canvas\, Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi\, Florence\, Italy \nOrganized by Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi and Civita Mostre e Musei.

SUMMARY:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion [SOLD OUT]
DESCRIPTION:Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion \n\nIn conjunction with In Caravaggio’s Light | Baroque Masterpieces from the Fondazione Roberto Longhi\, the MFA introduces the Baroque + Bottle Book Club\, a dynamic literary series that pairs contemporary fiction with the timeless themes of the Baroque.  \nPresented in partnership with Book + Bottle\, St. Pete’s beloved independent bookstore and wine bar\, each gathering invites readers to dive into contemporary novels that echo the emotional intensity\, moral tension\, and timeless questions embedded in the Baroque movement. With expertly paired wines\, lively\, guided conversations\, and exclusive in-gallery experiences\, this series creates unexpected connections between the masterpieces on view and the pressing issues of today.   \nWhile Caravaggio and his male contemporaries rose to fame\, the contributions of women artists from the period were often overshadowed or erased. In the centuries before\, during\, and since the Baroque period\, art collectors largely centered their acquisitions on male painters\, leaving generations of women’s artistry overlooked. Today\, scholars and curators are reexamining that history\, amplifying the voices and legacies of women who pushed boundaries then and now.  \nThis session takes that conversation into literature with Lauren Groff’s celebrated novel Matrix\, which reimagines the life of Marie de France\, a historic visionary cast out from royal court and thrust into leadership of an impoverished abbey. Fierce\, sensual\, and richly imagined\, Groff’s heroine becomes a force of creativity\, faith\, and defiance in a world that struggles to contain her power.   \nWhat to Expect: \n\n6:00–6:30 pm — Arrivals: grab a glass of wine and ease in with thought-starter prompts and casual conversation.\n6:30–7:30 pm — Guided discussion led by Book + Bottle\, exploring the book’s themes and connections to the Baroque.\n7:30–8:00 pm — Gallery spotlight with MFA curators and educators: a focused look at a work from In Caravaggio’s Light to bring the conversation full circle.\n\n\n\nBaroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion  \nThursday\, December 18\, 2025\n6:00 PM–8:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \n$25 for Members; $35 for Not-Yet-Members. \nTickets include program and 1 glass of wine. In precise\, incantatory prose\, Groff follows Marie’s evolving vision and authority as she navigates faith\, desire\, and the politics of a women’s community—blending historical detail with a quietly uncanny atmosphere. The result is a fierce\, immersive meditation on creativity\, power\, and belonging—without giving away where Marie’s path leads. \nSee ALL Baroque + Bottle Book Club Dates and Times: \n\n\n\nNovember 20\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Representation + Marginalization\nDecember 18\, 2025 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Women + Exclusion \nJanuary 15 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Fragility + Faith\nFebruary 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Body + Perception\nMarch 19 @ 6 pm: Baroque + Bottle Book Club | Sacred + Secular\n\n\n\n\nImages: \nJusepe de Ribera\, St. Thomas (detail)\, c. 1612\, Oil on canvas\, Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi\, Florence\, Italy \nOrganized by Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi and Civita Mostre e Musei.
