SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Brookhart Jonquil
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Brookhart Jonquil\nIn 2024\, Miami-based artist Brookhart Jonquil was commissioned to create Sky Dancer\, a site-specific sculptural duo in the alcoves of the Museum’s Great Hall. Please join us for a presentation by Jonquil as he describes that work\, along with his larger practice. \nJonquil’s artwork challenges us to become aware of the constructed nature of our perception. Using the visual language of illusion\, he works with mirrors and prisms as optical materials\, creating objects and images that exist only in relationship with a perceiver. In this artist talk\, Jonquil will show us the development of his early works\, which attempted to diminish physical material in favor of the intangible– empty space\, light\, and gravity. Bringing us to his recent ecologically-oriented works\, Jonquil traces the evolution of his understanding of space\, and shows that our ability to respond appropriately to the challenges facing the world is inseparable from our ability to see the world as it is\, which is inseparable from our ability to let go of what we think we see. \nJonquil’s work has been exhibited by the Bass Museum of Art\, the De la Cruz Collection\, MoCA Tucson\, Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice\, and Fundación Pablo Atchugarry in Uruguay\, and is currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts St Petersburg. After earning both his BA in art history and BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona\, Jonquil went on to receive his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010\, where he was awarded a graduate fellowship. He has been artist in residence in Everglades National Park\, Floodlight in New Delhi\, and NARS in Brooklyn\, among others. Brookhart Jonquil was born in Santa Cruz\, California in 1984. \nArtist Talk | Brookhart Jonquil\nSaturday\, April 19\, 2025\n11:00 AM–12:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFREE for MFA Members; Included with the cost of admission for Not-Yet Members. \nREGISTER \nNot yet a member?\nBecome a member today and enjoy all the benefits membership at the MFA offers!  \nMFA Members enjoy free admission for an entire year\, early access to special exhibitions\, discounts at the MFA Shop and Café Clementine\, special member-only exclusive events\, and more. SUMMARY:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art
DESCRIPTION:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nKimono is a traditional Japanese dress which has a strict dress code\, layers of socio-cultural symbolism\, and regulated aesthetic expressions. Since the Japonisme movement in nineteenth-century Europe\, Western painters had been influenced by Ukiyo-e\, Japanese woodblock printing\, which depicted women in kimono during the Edo period (1603-1868). \nVincent Van Gogh painted a courtesan in her distinct kimono and hairstyle in his “Courtesane” (1887)\, and Claude Monet painted his wife in a red kimono gown in “La Japonaise” (1875). Designers\, such as Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin\, designed clothes that were loose-fitting like kimono\, and imitated its geometrical shapes. \nThe Western fascination with kimono continues in the twenty-first century\, such as Dior’s kimono-inspired couture collection\, and Victoria’s Secret’s “Sexy Little Geisha” collection. With the development of social media\, protests and criticisms against the use of kimono in the creative field have been loud and explicit. \nIn this presentation\, Yuniya Kawamura examines where we draw a line between appreciation and appropriation\, and compares and contrasts different viewpoints between Japanese-Americans and native Japanese who were born and bred in Japan.   \nCultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nYuniya Kawamura\nSunday\, April 27\, 2025\n2:00 PM–3:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFREE for MFA Members; Included with the cost of admission for Not-Yet Members. SUMMARY:Koinobori Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:Koinobori Children’s Day\nFamilies are invited to visit the Museum of Fine Arts to learn about and celebrate Koinobori\, the Japanese national holiday that translates to “carp streamers.” Koinobori is Japan’s Children’s Day\, traditionally celebrated on May 5th each year\, where communities gather for a festival filled with colorful carp kites. The MFA will honor this holiday in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibition\, Kimono: The Triumph of Japanese Dress\, where similar imagery and symbolism often seen on carp kites can be found. These carp kites (also known as carp windsocks or streamers) are created to represent each family member and celebrate children and their well-being. When a family’s carp kites are hung together on one pole\, they symbolize strength\, determination\, and perseverance—qualities embodied by the carp itself. \n  \n\n\n\n\nKoinobori Children’s Day\nSunday\, May 4\, 2025\n10:00 AM–12:00 PM\nFront Steps of the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\nFREE for everyone! \n  \n

A beautiful story about everyday magic.\n“A loving survey of the queer community in all its diversity. . . . With affirming discussions of togetherness and LGBTQ+ rights\, the book’s final takeaway that ‘being yourself is a blast’ hits just the right note.” —Booklist \nPride’s . . . a day that means “Together\, we are strong!” \nThis joyful picture-book homage to a day of community and inclusion—and to the joys of anticipation—is also a comprehensive history. With bright\, buoyant illustrations and lyrical\, age-appropriate rhyme modeled on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas\,” it tackles difficult content such as the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS marches. On the night before Pride\, families everywhere are preparing to partake. As one family packs snacks and makes signs\, an older sibling shares the importance of the march with the newest member of the family. Reflecting on the day\, the siblings agree that the best thing about Pride is getting to be yourself. Author Joanna McClintick and Pura Belpré Award–winning author-illustrator Juana Medina create a new classic that pays homage to the beauty of families of all compositions—and of all-inclusive love.

And he loves sweets\, especially the traditional dessert laddoo. But when Ganesha insists on biting into a super jumbo jawbreaker laddoo\, his tusk breaks off! Ganesha is terribly upset\, but with the help of the wise poet Vyasa\, he learns that what seems broken can actually be quite useful after all. With vibrant\, graphic illustrations\, expressive characters\, and off-beat humor\, this is a wonderfully inventive twist on a classic tale.
