In this lively discussion\, Shelley and Paulson will share insights into the project’s evolution\, its use of humble materials like cardboard\, and its relevance in an era defined by misinformation and censorship. \nFrom the enduring power of the written word to its growing instability in today’s “post-truth” landscape\, this conversation offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from the artists about how and why this work challenges us to reconsider what we trust – and why it matters. \nSun\, July 12\, 1 PMFree with admission; Registration required \nRegister \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nWard Shelley and Douglas Paulson have been collaborating in performance and installation projects since they met in Brooklyn in 2004. Their most-often cited works are the Archive projects and the Last Library series\, in which rooms full of sculptural objects\, typically books and boxes\, become immersive sculptural supports for text. They have also made inhabited structures in which they lived and worked\, such as Flatland with Alex Schweder\, and have collaborated with artist collectives in Queens\, New York. \nThe text material in The Archives and Last Libraries reflect the artists interest in the plight of contemporary culture and how it has been shaped by mass media technologies and the needs of the powerful. Popular internet memes\, trendy political jingoism\, lost histories\, commercial slogans and notions of individualism are all in play. These pieces are designed for immersive browsing and reflection. No two person’s experiences will be the same. \nShelley and Paulson have exhibited together more than 25 times across the United States and Europe\, but centered in the New York area. Shelley also makes informational diagrams and inhabited performance architecture with Alex Schweder. A graduate of Florida Presbyterian College\, now Eckerd College\, Shelley splits his time between Connecticut and Florida. Douglas Paulson has years of experience working in the artist collective scene and teaches at Parsons\, New School University. He lives in Queens\, NY. \n  \n

Her work links feminized labor and the aesthetics of celebration to colonial art history and racialized oppression through the guise of using pink as a weapon of mass destruction. She fuses confectionary labor with found images to explore the meaning of belonging. Mayorga holds an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nMayorga’s most recent solo museum exhibition\, Dreaming of You\, was at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in 2023-24. In 2023\, Mayorga had her first major solo museum exhibition\, What a Time to Be\, at The Momentary\, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, NY; Vincent Price Art Museum\, Monterey Park\, CA; El Museo del Barrio\,The Center for Craft\, Asheville\, NC; Museo Universitario del Chopo\, Mexico City\, MX; and LACMA\, Los Angeles\, CA. In 1988\, Banisadr left Iran with his family at the age of twelve\, first reaching Turkey and then San Diego\, California. While living in San Francisco as a young adult\, he became involved with the local graffiti art community while studying psychology. He later moved to New York City where he earned a BFA at the School of Visual Arts (2005) and an MFA at the New York Academy of Art (2007). The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY. Banisadr has been the subject of international solo museum exhibitions at the Museo Stefano Bardini and Palazzo Vecchio\, Florence\, (2021); Benaki Museum\, Athens\, (2020); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art\, Hartford\, (2020); Gemäldegalerie\, Academy of Fine Arts\, Vienna\, (2019); and the Het Noordbrabants Museum\, Den Bosch\, (2019). Most recently\, Yankowitz has deepened her interest in technology and new media to create immersive environments that spotlight women-centered histories that have gone unknown for far too long. \nNina Yankowitz was born and raised in New Jersey and lives between New York City and Sag Harbor. Her works are in public collections\, including the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco\, San Francisco\, CA; Virginia Museum of History & Culture\, Richmond\, VA; and the Smith College Museum of Art\, Northampton\, MA. Her archival materials are found in the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. DESCRIPTION:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nKimono is a traditional Japanese dress which has a strict dress code\, layers of socio-cultural symbolism\, and regulated aesthetic expressions. Since the Japonisme movement in nineteenth-century Europe\, Western painters had been influenced by Ukiyo-e\, Japanese woodblock printing\, which depicted women in kimono during the Edo period (1603-1868).  \nVincent Van Gogh painted a courtesan in her distinct kimono and hairstyle in his “Courtesane” (1887)\, and Claude Monet painted his wife in a red kimono gown in “La Japonaise” (1875). DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Brookhart Jonquil\nIn 2024\, Miami-based artist Brookhart Jonquil was commissioned to create Sky Dancer\, a site-specific sculptural duo in the alcoves of the Museum’s Great Hall. Please join us for a presentation by Jonquil as he describes that work\, along with his larger practice. \nJonquil’s artwork challenges us to become aware of the constructed nature of our perception. Using the visual language of illusion\, he works with mirrors and prisms as optical materials\, creating objects and images that exist only in relationship with a perceiver. In this artist talk\, Jonquil will show us the development of his early works\, which attempted to diminish physical material in favor of the intangible– empty space\, light\, and gravity. Bringing us to his recent ecologically-oriented works\, Jonquil traces the evolution of his understanding of space\, and shows that our ability to respond appropriately to the challenges facing the world is inseparable from our ability to see the world as it is\, which is inseparable from our ability to let go of what we think we see. \nJonquil’s work has been exhibited by the Bass Museum of Art\, the De la Cruz Collection\, MoCA Tucson\, Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice\, and Fundación Pablo Atchugarry in Uruguay\, and is currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts St Petersburg. After earning both his BA in art history and BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona\, Jonquil went on to receive his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010\, where he was awarded a graduate fellowship. He has been artist in residence in Everglades National Park\, Floodlight in New Delhi\, and NARS in Brooklyn\, among others. While a teenager\, his family moved to East Asia\, where he lived for much of the late ‘60s and ‘70s. He became interested in East Asian culture\, learned Mandarin\, and studied traditional Japanese arts. Along the way he imported to the US antique Japanese kimono and other Japanese and Chinese art objects under the name Taisho 5 Collection. Peter traveled widely in East and South Asia\, ultimately settling in New York City. He made a later career in investment banking\, arranging international mergers and acquisitions for a Swiss firm\, and then for his own partnership\, Acquest International. He retired in 2018\, at which time he moved to St. Pete Beach\, where he now resides with his partner Diane Gilmour. Although she was a skilled artist\, she was also the first person to spend decades studying the relationships of insects and plants. \nMerian researched\, wrote\, illustrated and published several books that revolutionized the study and depictions of nature. DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk | Molly Vaughan \nSince 2012\, Seattle artist Molly Vaughan has utilized her multi module approach to art-production to honor the lives of murdered transgender and gender non-conforming Americans with a series of works called Project 42. Through the creation of garments and diverse collaborative memorial actions\, Vaughan raises awareness of the violence that transgender and gender non-conforming individuals\, particularly trans women and trans femmes of color\, face in contemporary American society with “42” referencing a symbolic average lifespan of someone in this community. \nVaughan’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2024\, she represented the state of Washington at the National Museum of Women in the Arts as part of their international triennial series Women to Watch. Her performance work Over\, Under\, Over: Intertwined Experiences in a Transgender Age was hosted at the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg in 2015. DESCRIPTION:Skyway 2024 is a multi-venue exhibition shared among five institutions: the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg; The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art\, Sarasota; Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College Art and Design; the Tampa Museum of Art; and the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum\, Tampa. Bring the whole family! \nBECOME A MEMBER \n  \n\nKendra Frorup (b. 1965\,  Nassau\, Bahamas) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator\, and also a collector: a collector of memories\, of sounds\, movements\, and\, most of all\, objects. For Skyway 2024\, Frorup created site-specific sculptures in the Rococo gallery of the MFA\, along with a painting of her daughter Lexi which is conversation with a 1799 portrait of French artist Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun’s daughter Julia. Frorup often draws upon personal memories to investigate Caribbean culture and the wider African Diaspora\, often unrecognized in discussions of so-called western art. Born in the Bahamas\, Frorup is Associate Professor in Sculpture at University of Tampa. She is also the first woman artist to have a solo career retrospective at the National Gallery of the Bahamas.  \nEmily Martinez (b. 1999\, Queens\, NY) draws from family photographs\, Renaissance paintings\, and Mexican muralism to highlight and elevate brown bodies so often left out of traditional\, particularly western religious\, narratives. For Skyway 2024\, Martinez has created a work that responds directly to the Museum of Fine Art’s painting The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine by Fabrizio Santafede (Italian\, 1560-1635). Martinez earned her BFA from the University of Central Florida in 2022 and is currently pursuing an MFA from the University of South Florida. Born to Mexican and Dominican parents\, her work often explores the personal experiences of Latin-American immigrants in the United States.   \nAnat Pollack (b. 1968\, Cleveland\, OH) Pollack skillfully moves between cutting edge technologies and ancient ones\, employing both 3D printing techniques and hand-formed clay sculptures.  For Skyway 2024\, she has placed her hand-built bronze cast fertility objects throughout the Museum of Fine Arts’ ancient Greek and Roman galleries. Pollack earned her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University\, Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. A convergent media artist exploring the perception and pliability of time\, she is Associate Professor of Art at University of South Florida\, Tampa.   \n
