She enjoys writing about personal challenges. She also uses poetry to communicate how she experiences the world around her concisely with her audience. Outside of poetry she finds joy in playing guitar and ukulele and writing original songs. When she is not writing or playing music she volunteers with CompassionKind\, her sister’s rescue organization. Her biggest aspiration is to share her work and inspire others. \n \nAjuni Singh\nAjuni Singh is a junior at Howard W. While she is not an avid poetry writer\, she finds poetry to be a quintessential mode of storytelling which often leaves people reflecting and feeling\, augmenting the interconnection of human beings within a larger context. Outside of writing\, she enjoys singing in and out of shower\, and giving her puppy some good rubs. In the future\, Ajuni aspires to be a singer-songwriter making music that can bring someone into their feels. \n \nAlistair Faylo\nAlistair Faylo is a junior at Hollins High\, where he’s the president of his school’s literacy team. His poetry tends to draw from his own experiences and emotions\, finding awe in the beautiful\, terrible\, screw-it-all of the human experience. Recently he’s been trying to branch out and find other sources for his poetry\, trying most recently to work with irony and satire. Outside of his writing\, Alistair likes to draw\, read\, and write other genres like fiction. Alistair hopes to one day teach Creative Writing at the high school or college level and help others find that creative spark. \n \nAva Elizabeth John\nAva Elizabeth John is a senior in the IB program at St. Pete High where she serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Florida’s oldest student-run high school newspaper\, the Palmetto & Pine\, and the President of English Honor Society. Starting from visual arts to music and now to literature\, Bomin deeply appreciates the spectrum of interpretations they give to the audience. She is interested in how words can express ideas and experiences in unique\, impactful ways. While she is drawn to the logic and problem-solving aspects of the sciences–hoping to pursue a career in such fields– Bomin greatly values the power of literature in shaping perceptions and communication. Through poetry\, she hopes to become a refined writer. \n \nDanica Johnson\nDanica Johnson is a 10th grader at Hollins HS. Last year\, her poetry was published in the Hollins HS magazine: “Revelations”. She enjoys exploring different kinds of writing such as screenwriting and a variety of prose genres\, but poetry calls to her the most. Josephine uses poetry to explore the nuances of her own emotions and channel the emotions of others. She enjoys writing during thunderstorms when the charged energy outside reflects the turmoil within. Outside of writing\, Josephine is often found playing with her seven dogs and two cats\, drinking tea\, and reading classic literature. \n \nKaleigh Breivis\nKaleigh Breivis is in eleventh grade at Howard W Blake high school. She draws inspiration for her poems from her background in fine arts as well as the desire to understand the complexities of our natural world. Kaleigh moved from Los Angeles California to Tampa Florida during the pandemic\, using her experiences to motivate her perspective and words. Outside of writing Kaleigh enjoys metalsmithing\, reading\, and advocating for a sustainable future. \n \nMerlyn Thompson\nMerlyn Thompson is a freshman at Northeast High School. He has a deep love for all of the arts and loves to explore every channel. He writes most of his poetry on the world around him and his view on it. SUMMARY:Spotlight Series | Renaissance Babies & Images of Motherhood
DESCRIPTION:MFA Spotlight Series | Renaissance Babies & Images of Motherhood with Lauren Amalia Redding & Natalie Velez\nJoin MFA docent and Ph.D. student Natalie Velez and artist and writer Lauren Amalia Redding for a thought-provoking gallery talk that bridges art history and contemporary perspectives on motherhood imagery. \nDrawing from her scholarly paper\, Ugly Babies: Deconstruction in the Way We Look at a Work of Art\, Velez will explore the often-humorous perception of “ugliness” in Renaissance depictions of the infant Christ\, shedding light on historical artistic conventions. Redding will examine the materials and techniques used in these works\, revealing how artistic choices shaped their visual language. \nIn honor of Women’s History Month\, this discussion offers insights from both a female art historian and a female artist\, reexamining the portrayal of motherhood—one of the most enduring themes in Western and Christian art—through a fresh and nuanced lens. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMFA Spotlight Series | Renaissance Babies & Images of Motherhood with Lauren Amalia Redding & Natalie Velez\nTuesday\, March 4\, 2025\n11:00 AM–12:00 PM\nFREE for MFA Members; Included with the cost of admission for Not-Yet Members\nRegistration required. \nREGISTER \nNot yet a member?\nBecome a member today and enjoy all the benefits membership at the MFA offers!  \nMFA Members enjoy free admission for an entire year\, early access to special exhibitions\, discounts at the MFA Shop and Café Clementine\, special member-only exclusive events\, and more. Bring the whole family! \nBECOME A MEMBER \n\nABOUT LAUREN AMALIA REDDING \n \nLauren Amalia Redding (b. 1987) is an artist and writer based in Naples\, Florida. She received her B.A. from Northwestern University in Evanston\, Illinois and her M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art in New York\, New York. She creates drawings that use meticulous draftsmanship to intertwine the imagery and symbolism of astronauts with art history\, exploring how philosophy and culture—which propel technology and the humanities in equal measure—launch each starsailor into their new frontiers. Except for large-scale mixed media works on DuraLar and Mylar\, she primarily draws in silverpoint\, a pre-Renaissance drawing method in which the artist uses a piece of silver wire to make marks across a gessoed surface. \nLauren has exhibited and curated her drawings across the United States\, and was an artist-in-residence at the Florence School of Fine Arts in Florence\, Italy. Her artwork has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur\, HuffPost Arts & Culture\, and CanvasRebel. She has been a guest on podcasts such as Art Grind and Art Materials Advisor. She is an arts and culture writer for Gulfshore Life magazine in Southwest Florida\, and a contributing writer for The Blue Review\, based in New York City\, and PaintGuide\, based in Hong Kong. In 2018\, she and her husband\, the sculptor Brett F. Harvey\, relocated to the Gulf Coast after nearly ten years living in New York City\, where she worked jobs ranging from a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to refining sculpture surfaces in Jeff Koons’ studio. Prior to the birth of their son in 2023\, Lauren taught drawing extensively and had two exhibitions in 2022 alone: Interstellar Insulation at Pensacola State College in Florida’s Panhandle\, and Interstellar Ascendants at MIFA Gallery in Miami. Lauren currently balances caring for her child full-time with showing at Method & Concept in Naples\, Florida. Recent highlights include exhibiting with Manhattan’s the Pen + Brush\, and the acquisition of four of her drawings by Indiana University’s renowned Kinsey Institute.  \nABOUT NATALIE VELEZ \n \nIn 2009\, Natalie Velez moved from St. Petersburg\, Russia to St. Petersburg\, Florida. Natalie credits her relocation for opening a new world for her: that of American contemporary art and how it can alter the ways in which we visualize and conceptualize the world. \nNatalie earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the State University for Culture and Arts in St. Petersburg\, Russia. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in philosophy and aesthetics in visual art from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts\, headquartered in Maine (IDSVA). In her research\, she explores the intersection of politics and cross-cultural art collaborations. \nNatalie’s professional experience includes working as an international education and business consultant\, art gallery owner\, and educator of arts and philosophy. She presented her work on the relations of arts\, aesthetics\, and philosophy during her residences in Mexico and Italy\, as well as at institutions such as the University of Tampa\, Eckerd College\, and the Museum of Fine Arts. She is invited to speak at the 60th International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University and present at the 11th in vivo Dubrovnik Conference on the Philosophy of Art at The Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik\, Croatia. \n\nImages: \nMarco Palmezzano\, Italian\, 1460-1539\, The Presentation of Christ in the Temple\, c. 1530\, Tempera on panel\, Extended loan from a private collection \nMaster of the Greenville Tondo\, Italian\, active c. 1454-1513\, Adoration of the Christ Child by Mary and Joseph\, c. 1510\, Oil on panel\, Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Vance Bishop \n

A gift from her obachan\, it holds special memories of her grandmother’s visit last summer. And Suki is going to wear it on her first day back to school — no matter what anyone says. When it’s Suki’s turn to share with her classmates what she did during the summer\, she tells them about the street festival she attended with her obachan and the circle dance that they took part in. In fact\, she gets so carried away reminiscing that she’s soon humming the music and dancing away\, much to the delight of her entire class!Filled with gentle enthusiasm and a touch of whimsy\, Suki’s Kimono is the joyful story of a little girl whose spirit leads her to march — and dance — to her own drumbeat.
