SUMMARY:Aigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets: Nineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers
DESCRIPTION:Aigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets: Nineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers\nFeathers\, long a staple of fashionable design\, became paramount to the well-dressed in nineteenth-century Europe and the United States. They increasingly decorated the edges of custom-made dresses\, graced hats\, or adorned elaborate hairstyles. \nMuch like the production of John James Audubon’s Birds of America series\, this obsession with feathers in fashion reflected larger cultural interests in understanding and replicating the natural world. Though beautiful to look at\, these designs ultimately came at an ecological price—with many bird populations decimated to meet demand. \nJoin art historian Erin Wilson as she explores these sartorial and environmental legacies. \nAigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets:\nNineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers\nThursday\, January 9\, 2025\n6:00 PM–7:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFree for MFA Members; $15 for Not-Yet-Members (Youth 17 and under are Free!)* \n*Program ticket includes Art After Dark admission from 5:00 PM–8:00 PM! SUMMARY:Art & Nature Before Audubon: A Closer Look at Maria Sibylla Merian
DESCRIPTION:Art & Nature Before Audubon: A Closer Look at Maria Sibylla Merian\nMore than 150 years before Audubon published his images of birds in their natural habitat\, Maria Sibylla Merian (German\, 1647-1717) published the first natural history book pairing ecologically related flora and fauna. \nHer beautiful images of plants and insects has led history to label her as an artist who painted and etched natural history subjects. Although she was a skilled artist\, she was also the first person to spend decades studying the relationships of insects and plants. \nMerian researched\, wrote\, illustrated and published several books that revolutionized the study and depictions of nature. In this talk\, Dr. Kay Etheridge will discuss Merian’s work in comparison to that of those who followed her\, including that of other women. \n \nArt & Nature Before Audubon: A Closer Look at Maria Sibylla Merian\npresented by Dr. Kay Etheridge\nThursday\, February 6\, 2025\n6:00 PM–7:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Recently he’s been trying to branch out and find other sources for his poetry\, trying most recently to work with irony and satire. Outside of his writing\, Alistair likes to draw\, read\, and write other genres like fiction. Alistair hopes to one day teach Creative Writing at the high school or college level and help others find that creative spark. \n \nAva Elizabeth John\nAva Elizabeth John is a senior in the IB program at St. Pete High where she serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Florida’s oldest student-run high school newspaper\, the Palmetto & Pine\, and the President of English Honor Society.
