Bring the whole family! \nBECOME A MEMBER \n\nABOUT PETER KUHLMANN \n \nPeter Kuhlmann was born to German and Lithuanian parents in New York City in 1952. While a teenager\, his family moved to East Asia\, where he lived for much of the late ‘60s and ‘70s. He became interested in East Asian culture\, learned Mandarin\, and studied traditional Japanese arts. Along the way he imported to the US antique Japanese kimono and other Japanese and Chinese art objects under the name Taisho 5 Collection. Peter traveled widely in East and South Asia\, ultimately settling in New York City. He made a later career in investment banking\, arranging international mergers and acquisitions for a Swiss firm\, and then for his own partnership\, Acquest International. He retired in 2018\, at which time he moved to St. Pete Beach\, where he now resides with his partner Diane Gilmour. SANDECKI \n \nFor 30 years Annamarie was the Director of the Tiffany & Co. Archives and Heritage Collection.  She was tasked with acquiring vintage Tiffany jewelry\, watches\, silver hollowware and objects d’art for the Company’s own collection.  The resulting assemblage of several thousand museum-quality pieces is universally recognized as the world’s most important group of luxury objects by America’s most iconic jeweler.  Recently Annamarie has written about jewelry in Currier & Ives prints and provided object essays for the catalog accompanying The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Collecting Inspiration\, Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co. Currently she is an expert researcher for the International Antique Jewelers’ Association as well as a frequent guest lecturer.  She is well-known among jewelry enthusiasts for her Instagram account Archivists Delight.   \n  \n  \n

She earned her BFA degree from Florida Southern College as a Studio Art major with an Art History minor. While attending FSC\, Casey took museum studies courses that fueled her interest in working within art museums. Her previous professional experience in art galleries and museums includes working at the AGB Museum of Art (formally the Polk Museum of Art)\, MAACM\, the Lake Whales Arts Council\, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Casey is also a local working artist who has exhibited works in St Petersburg\, Lakeland\, Sarasota\, and other local\, mid-Florida cities.  \nABOUT NOAH COX \n \nNoah Cox is the Research Associate for Museum Collections at the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg. His primary responsibility is to examine and study the museum’s permanent collection\, with a special emphasis on provenance research. In addition to this research\, he works with the curatorial team on auxiliary exhibitions and with the collections team to care for the art at the MFA.  \nNoah holds a BA in Art History from New College of Florida and an MA in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art. Before joining the MFA in 2023\, he worked in exhibitions and public programming at Architecture Sarasota and interned at the Sarasota Art Museum. Recently\, he completed the 2024 Nazi-Era Art Provenance Research Training Program through the Center for Art Collection Ethics (ACE) at the University of Denver.  \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Brookhart Jonquil
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Brookhart Jonquil\nIn 2024\, Miami-based artist Brookhart Jonquil was commissioned to create Sky Dancer\, a site-specific sculptural duo in the alcoves of the Museum’s Great Hall. Please join us for a presentation by Jonquil as he describes that work\, along with his larger practice. \nJonquil’s artwork challenges us to become aware of the constructed nature of our perception. Using the visual language of illusion\, he works with mirrors and prisms as optical materials\, creating objects and images that exist only in relationship with a perceiver. In this artist talk\, Jonquil will show us the development of his early works\, which attempted to diminish physical material in favor of the intangible– empty space\, light\, and gravity. Bringing us to his recent ecologically-oriented works\, Jonquil traces the evolution of his understanding of space\, and shows that our ability to respond appropriately to the challenges facing the world is inseparable from our ability to see the world as it is\, which is inseparable from our ability to let go of what we think we see. \nJonquil’s work has been exhibited by the Bass Museum of Art\, the De la Cruz Collection\, MoCA Tucson\, Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice\, and Fundación Pablo Atchugarry in Uruguay\, and is currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts St Petersburg. After earning both his BA in art history and BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona\, Jonquil went on to receive his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010\, where he was awarded a graduate fellowship. He has been artist in residence in Everglades National Park\, Floodlight in New Delhi\, and NARS in Brooklyn\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nKimono is a traditional Japanese dress which has a strict dress code\, layers of socio-cultural symbolism\, and regulated aesthetic expressions. Since the Japonisme movement in nineteenth-century Europe\, Western painters had been influenced by Ukiyo-e\, Japanese woodblock printing\, which depicted women in kimono during the Edo period (1603-1868).  \nVincent Van Gogh painted a courtesan in her distinct kimono and hairstyle in his “Courtesane” (1887)\, and Claude Monet painted his wife in a red kimono gown in “La Japonaise” (1875). Designers\, such as Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin\, designed clothes that were loose-fitting like kimono\, and imitated its geometrical shapes.  \nThe Western fascination with kimono continues in the twenty-first century\, such as Dior’s kimono-inspired couture collection\, and Victoria’s Secret’s “Sexy Little Geisha” collection. She is the author of “Cultural Appropriation in Fashion and Entertainment” (Bloomsbury 2021). She has also published “The Japanese Revolution in Paris Fashion” (Bloomsbury 2004) and “Fashioning Japanese Subcultures” (Bloomsbury 2012\, 2025). She is currently completing a book on “Sebastian Masuda: A Biography” (Anthem Press 2025). Her current research includes Japanese Ukiyo-e\, Kabuki\, and the Japonisme movement in the 19th century European art world.
