SUMMARY:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art
DESCRIPTION:Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nKimono is a traditional Japanese dress which has a strict dress code\, layers of socio-cultural symbolism\, and regulated aesthetic expressions. Since the Japonisme movement in nineteenth-century Europe\, Western painters had been influenced by Ukiyo-e\, Japanese woodblock printing\, which depicted women in kimono during the Edo period (1603-1868). \nVincent Van Gogh painted a courtesan in her distinct kimono and hairstyle in his “Courtesane” (1887)\, and Claude Monet painted his wife in a red kimono gown in “La Japonaise” (1875). Designers\, such as Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin\, designed clothes that were loose-fitting like kimono\, and imitated its geometrical shapes. \nThe Western fascination with kimono continues in the twenty-first century\, such as Dior’s kimono-inspired couture collection\, and Victoria’s Secret’s “Sexy Little Geisha” collection. With the development of social media\, protests and criticisms against the use of kimono in the creative field have been loud and explicit. \nIn this presentation\, Yuniya Kawamura examines where we draw a line between appreciation and appropriation\, and compares and contrasts different viewpoints between Japanese-Americans and native Japanese who were born and bred in Japan.   \nCultural Appreciation and Appropriation of Kimono in Western Fashion and Art\nYuniya Kawamura\nSunday\, April 27\, 2025\n2:00 PM–3:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFREE for MFA Members; Included with the cost of admission for Not-Yet Members. SUMMARY:Koinobori Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:Koinobori Children’s Day\nFamilies are invited to visit the Museum of Fine Arts to learn about and celebrate Koinobori\, the Japanese national holiday that translates to “carp streamers.” Koinobori is Japan’s Children’s Day\, traditionally celebrated on May 5th each year\, where communities gather for a festival filled with colorful carp kites. The MFA will honor this holiday in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibition\, Kimono: The Triumph of Japanese Dress\, where similar imagery and symbolism often seen on carp kites can be found. These carp kites (also known as carp windsocks or streamers) are created to represent each family member and celebrate children and their well-being. When a family’s carp kites are hung together on one pole\, they symbolize strength\, determination\, and perseverance—qualities embodied by the carp itself. \n  \n\n\n\n\nKoinobori Children’s Day\nSunday\, May 4\, 2025\n10:00 AM–12:00 PM\nFront Steps of the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\nFREE for everyone! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Marly Music presents Weaving through Time: Cross-Cultural Dialogues in Modern Japanese Music
DESCRIPTION:Like the Kimono\, Japanese music in the 20th century underwent a series of transformations and changes while still retaining a strong cultural identity. European composers\, who had been inspired by exposure to Eastern music and philosophy\, influenced the new generations of composers in Japan who responded in turn. “Weaving through Time” showcases the gorgeous and expansive works of Toru Takemitsu and Toshio Hosokawa and the playful Techno Etudes of Karen Tanaka alongside works of Maurice Ravel\, Claude Debussy\, and Olivier Messiaen.   \nNew World Piano Trio and The Florida Orchestra musicians Vivek Jayaraman\, Victor Minke Huls\, and Wesley Ducote will be joined by special guest Nicholas Davies (clarinetist of the Colorado Symphony) in a concert presentation of this crucial dialogue between Japan and the West: a conversation of aesthetics\, poetry\, texture\, and the exploration of time in music.  \nMarly Music presents Weaving through Time: Cross-Cultural Dialogues in Modern Japanese Music\nSaturday\, May 24\, 2025\n2:00 PM–3:00 PM\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\nMarly Room\n$15 for MFA Members; $30 for Not-Yet-Members \nTICKETS \n\nABOUT THE MUSICIANS \n  \nNicholas Davies  \nNick Davies is the Bass/Utility Clarinet of the Colorado Symphony. A beautiful story about everyday magic.\n“A loving survey of the queer community in all its diversity. . . . With affirming discussions of togetherness and LGBTQ+ rights\, the book’s final takeaway that ‘being yourself is a blast’ hits just the right note.” —Booklist \nPride’s . . . a day that means “Together\, we are strong!” \nThis joyful picture-book homage to a day of community and inclusion—and to the joys of anticipation—is also a comprehensive history. With bright\, buoyant illustrations and lyrical\, age-appropriate rhyme modeled on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas\,” it tackles difficult content such as the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS marches. On the night before Pride\, families everywhere are preparing to partake. As one family packs snacks and makes signs\, an older sibling shares the importance of the march with the newest member of the family. Reflecting on the day\, the siblings agree that the best thing about Pride is getting to be yourself. Author Joanna McClintick and Pura Belpré Award–winning author-illustrator Juana Medina create a new classic that pays homage to the beauty of families of all compositions—and of all-inclusive love.

Her work spans sound\, performance\, visual art\, and film—often incorporating custom instruments\, original notation systems\, and experimental technologies. \nA master of sonic exploration\, she performs on “The Spaceship\,” a complex instrument system featuring modular synthesizers\, motion-sensitive controllers\, theremins\, toy pianos\, found objects\, and her custom 6’2” amplified zither\, Black Moon Lilith. \nElizabeth’s visual works have been shown in galleries and international film festivals\, and her acclaimed series FIELD STUDIES and AGGRESSIVE PILLOW TALK received support from the State of Florida and were central to her fellowship at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute (2021–22). \nHer work\, which encourages deep listening and reflection\, challenges traditional narratives and centers the idea that all things exist with essence beyond human definition. \nRecognized globally by scholars and press alike\, Fanfare Magazine and I Care If You Listen have both hailed her as “the Pauline Oliveros of her generation.” \nImages: \nNina Yankowitz\, Ms. Majesty\, 1970-71\, Acrylic compressor spray on canvas run through pleating machine.
