SUMMARY:Artist & Author Talk: Get the Picture
DESCRIPTION:Artist & Author Talk | Get the Picture with Bianca Bosker and Julie Curtiss \nJoin us for a lively discussion between bestselling author Bianca Bosker and Brooklyn-based artist Julie Curtiss around Bosker’s newest book Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey Among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See. \nSaturday\, November 16\, 2024\n11:00 AM–12:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFree for MFA Members; Included with the price of admission for Not-Yet-Members \nRegistration and museum admission required. \nREGISTER \nNot yet a member?\nBecome a member today and enjoy all the benefits membership at the MFA offers!  \nMFA Members enjoy free admission for an entire year\, early access to special exhibitions\, discounts at the MFA Shop and Café Clementine\, special member-only exclusive events\, and more. Bring the whole family! \nBECOME A MEMBER \n\nABOUT THE BOOK  \nThe New York Times bestselling author of Cork Dork takes readers on another fascinating\, hilarious\, and revelatory journey—this time burrowing deep inside the secretive world of art and artists  \nAn award-winning journalist obsessed with obsession\, Bianca Bosker’s existence was upended when she wandered into the art world—and couldn’t look away. Intrigued by artists who hyperventilate around their favorite colors and art fiends who max out credit cards to show hunks of metal they think can change the world\, Bosker grew fixated on understanding why art matters and how she—or any of us—could engage with it more deeply.  \nIn Get the Picture\, Bosker throws herself into the nerve center of art and the people who live for it: gallerists\, collectors\, curators\, and\, of course\, artists themselves—the kind who work multiple jobs to afford their studios while scrabbling to get eyes on their art. As she stretches canvases until her fingers blister\, talks her way into A-list parties full of billionaire collectors\, has her face sat on by a nearly-naked performance artist\, and forces herself to stare at a single sculpture for hours on end while working as a museum security guard\, she discovers not only the inner workings of the art-canonization machine but also a more expansive way of living.  \nProbing everything from cave paintings to Instagram\, and from the science of sight to the importance of beauty as it examines art’s role in our culture\, our economy\, and our hearts\, Get the Picture is a rollicking adventure that will change the way you see forever.  \n  \nABOUT BIANCA BOSKER \n \nBianca Bosker is the New York Times bestselling author of Cork Dork and\, most recently\, Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See. A contributing writer at The Atlantic\, she has also written for publications such as The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and The Wall Street Journal. Her work has been recognized with awards from the New York Press Club\, the Society of Professional Journalists\, and more\, and has been included in The Best American Travel Writing. She lives in New York City.  \nABOUT JULIE CURTISS \n \nJulie Curtiss was born in 1982 in Paris\, France and lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York. She graduated in 2006 with a BA and MFA from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts\, Paris. \nRecent solo exhibitions include White Cube Hong Kong (2023) and Mason’s Yard\, London (2021); Anton Kern Gallery\, New York (2022). \nCurtiss’ work is represented in a number of museum collections\, among which are Bronx Museum\, New York; Columbus Museum of Art\, Ohio; High Museum\, Atlanta; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis; and Yuz Museum\, Shanghai. \n
