Sometimes indefinable but always alluring, Modern art in the United States spans a number of decades and includes several distinct styles. These artists celebrated uniquely American viewpoints, landscapes, and experiences by reacting against — and simultaneously embracing — European movements.

This exhibition is drawn completely from the MFA’s collection, and features rarely seen photographs and works on paper, including works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Hart Benton, Alfred Stieglitz, Guy Pene du Bois, George Biddle, and Marguerite Thompson Zorach.
