Mosaic Mask

Maya, Guatemala, c. A.D. 250-900

Jade

Gift of Dr. Robert L. and Chitranee Drapkin

2019.17.15

Comprised of fragments of green jade, the features of this mask associate it with Maya masks from kingly tombs. As here, such “mosaic masks” were sometimes portraits, rather than depictions of a deity. The mask would have been accompanied by the deceased’s ashes, his statue, and a lock of his hair.
