Carved Stool

20th Century

Wood

Gift of Donna and Thomas Brumfield, Jr. in honor of Michael Milkovich

2002.30.21

As a symbol for leadership, the stool is found in all levels of the centralized political system in Ashanti society. Through its symmetry and carved support figures the stool projects the power of the Ashanti chief. Lacking metal adornments, this stool probably belonged to a lesser authority.
