Fakeye was a fifth generation Yoruba sculptor who gained a global following, with retrospectives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. During previous generations, sculptors were patronized by chiefs and priests. However, the decline of these traditions led Fakeye to modify his work to attract a wider clientele. His sculptures adopt the traditional Yoruba manner, but they do not serve a ritual purpose.
