Nour studied in Khartoum and London, arriving in the United States as a Rockefeller fellow in 1969. Following the receipt of an MFA at Yale, he began teaching art at Truman College in Chicago. His sculptures from this period are often abstract and minimal, yet many refer to Sudan and the Afro-Islamic culture in which he was raised, especially animals, landscape, and architecture.
