Seated Figure of Buddha

14th Century

Bronze

Gift of William C. Luban

1972.43

This bronze figure of a seated Buddha displays Sukhodayan or Sukhotai period (13–14th Century) features, like the Walking Buddha nearby. Seated in padmasana or lotus position, the Buddha rests one hand in his lap, while the other is on the right knee in the “earth-touching gesture:” Buddha is calling the Earth to witness the fact that he has triumphed good over evil.
