The Rest on the Flight into Egypt

possibly 17th century

Oil on copper

Gift of Dr. and Mrs. John Hamilton

1992.16

This painting depicts a moment of calm as the Holy Family fled Israel for Egypt. This work lacks the exuberance of many 17th century religious paintings. The style is more restrained and quiet. Many types of representations of the Flight into Egypt exist, but it unusual to have Mary, St. Joseph, and the Baby Jesus resting in a tent. The oil on copper technique gives the painting superior luminosity.
