Dial worked in many media, including large-scale painting and assemblage. He turned to works on paper after receiving a negative review of his drawings in the exhibition Ladies of the United States in the early 1990s. He set out to prove his command of the medium, and has stated “The rubbing and the smearing is the struggle to make something beautiful with your own hands.”
