Libero Andreotti

Italian (1875–1934)

Violin Player

1910

Bronze

Gift of Jean L. Rosborough

1981.1

Andreotti’s impressionistic modeling of this musician with her supple grace and clinging costume, allows us to imagine the missing violin and the unheard music. As such, it is Symbolist in conception. Placement of the classically clad figure at the edge of the supporting plinth creates tension and suspense. The figure is ambiguous and mysterious, inviting the viewer to look for deeper meaning underlying the surface. These concepts are key to the tenets of the symbolist aesthetic.
