Imagine yourself in London of the early 19th century. In 1800, the population of London was around a million souls. That number would swell to 4.5 million by 1880, and London was the largest, most spectacular city in the world. While Britain was experiencing the Industrial Revolution, its capital was both reaping the benefits and suffering the consequences. Picture Victorian London where the homes of the upper and middle class exist in close proximity to areas of unbelievable poverty and filth. Rich and poor alike are thrown together in the crowded city streets. It is unbearably hot by the fire, numbingly cold away from it. At night, the major streets are lit with feeble gas lamps. Indoors, a candle or oil lamp struggles against the darkness and blackens the ceilings.

Today’s presentation is a likely conversation that might have taken place in a Victorian home in London. The astute observations of this fictitious Victorian lady – Isabella Snodgrass – are historically accurate to the opinions of that day. The presentation is inspired by “Woman by the Sea, Le Puys” painted by Alfred Stevens.

This month’s program is entitled: Meeting Monet – A Victorian Woman’s Point of View

This performance will take place live in the Marly room at the MFA. To ensure the health and safety of our visitors and staff, face masks are recommended while inside the museum at all times and refreshments will not be served. Capacity for this event will be limited and advanced registration is required.
