In celebration of the exhibition Bernini and the Roman Baroque: Masterpieces from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, join us at the MFA for a screening of the film “The Cardboard Bernini”.

This 2012 film is about the artist James Grashow, whose “Corrugated Fountain,” was inspired by Rome’s Trevi Fountain and the works of Bernini. Unlike Bernini’s monumental works that have graced museums and plazas for centuries, Grashow’s “Corrugated Fountain” was intended to be temporary, with its deterioration at the hands of Mother Nature part of the creative life of the piece. Work on the fountain began in 2007 and was completed in 2010. This film documents this process from the start to finish.

Grashow said about his process, “All artists talk about is process, but the process that they talk about is always from beginning to finish. Nobody really talks about full-term process, to the end, to the destruction and the dissolution of the piece. Everything dissolves in eternity.”
