A celebration of artistic practices in the Tampa Bay region, Skyway 2024: A Contemporary Collaboration is a multi-venue exhibition shared among five institutions: the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota; the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design; the Tampa Museum of Art; and the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa. Working together, curators from each institution offer context for the diversity of art produced in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Sarasota counties.
For the third iteration of Skyway at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, we have invited seven artists to engage with the permanent collection galleries and the very infrastructure of our institution. Artists Will Douglas, Kendra Frorup, Emily Martinez, Cynthia Mason, Carola Miles, Anat Pollack, and Emiliano Settecasi will be taking over the MFA from the front façade to the Baroque Gallery. We welcome their interventions as we find new ways to engage with our encyclopedic permanent collection and the Museum’s history while celebrating singular artistic perspectives from the Tampa Bay area.
Curator, writer, and scholar Evan Garza is the guest juror for Skyway 2024. Currently a Curatorial Fellow at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Garza was a recent Fulbright Scholar at The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Ireland, and served as co-curator and artistic director of the 2021 Texas Biennial. Garza co-founded Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), a New York nonprofit and the first residency program in the world exclusively for LGBTQ+ artists. He, along with curators from the five exhibiting venues, will be contributing to a fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the exhibition.
