Proctor ran a flea market in Tallahassee before a family tragedy plunged her into spiritual turmoil.  She received a calling to paint on a door lying around the yard and has since created art with a mission. Proctor’s impetus is visionary and spiritual in nature, often inspired by her Christian beliefs. As the philosopher Arthur Danto has suggested, self-taught contemporary artists are “artworlds unto themselves,” and Proctor’s idea of the afterlife and Paradise is individualistic and lively, as well as spiritual. She richly transforms a simple door, painting it and encrusting it with photographs and found objects. In Proctor’s heaven, she will be reunited with her beloved grandmother, driving the cart at right.
