Warrior and Court Attendant

6th Century

Earthenware with traces of paint

Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur O. England

1990.17.18

This helmeted warrior is dressed in a belted tunic over pantaloons tied at the knees. His right hand probably also held a weapon. The hole in his abdomen may have secured a shield.

Dressed similarly to the warrior, this figure wears a courtier’s distinctive hat. His right hand probably held a weapon. The growing demand for burial goods led to the use of molds for making large quantities of figures. Despite mass production and basic sculptural techniques, these objects display great strength and a sense of vitality.
